>> reporter: after understanding the intention to scirpt the new voter i.d. -- to skirt the new voter i.d. law, they walk and talk even more. moran seems es assistant and tries to -- hesitant and tries to lobby the investigator -- to encourage the investigator to lobby for votes instead. but the investigator pushes on. the field director and son of an 11-term congressman finally seems to give in offering advice on how to pull off the deception at the polls. >> look at the law. >> reporter: shortly after, he reiterates his point.

>> reporter: i'm ken molistana, 9news now. >> he told us about the person who shot the video, the investigator who said, quote, he struck me as crazy. i thought he was joking. for only that i did humor him. in metro expect i should have just walked away making it clear there's no place in the electoral process or even the suggestion of illegal behavior, joking or not. the maryland state board of elections is investigating a problem with absentee ballots there. some ballots in prince george's county seemed to be missing a page. so far the board has confirmed the mistake in fewer than 20 ballots. residents who requested absentee ballots should make sure there is a second page which includes the questions 4 through 7. today supporters and

opponents of the same-sex marriage referendum in maryland are planning to rally at gallaudet university in the district, but they're both fighting for the same thing. both groups want dr. angela mccaskill reinstated as the school's chief diversity officer. she was placed on paid leave earlier this month after it was learned she signed a petition to get the referendum on the ballot. she says she's not anti-gay but thinks voters should decide whether same-sex marriage should be legal or not. the first viewing for a police officer killed in a crash last week will be tomorrow beginning at 6:00 p.m. at lee's funeral home in clinton there. will be a second viewing at st. stevens baptist church in temple hills. an egyptian militant suspected in the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya has been killed in ie row. a tunisia man is also facing

charges in connection with the september attack. four americans were killed in the attack, including the u.s. ambassador chris stevens. the white house, state department and the f.b.i. were informed a terror group had claimed credit for the attack on facebook and twitter two hours after it began. that's according to e-mails obtained by cbs. the e-mails also suggest u.s. diplomats were informing officials in washington about the assault as it was unfolding. that raises further questions about the apparent confusion on the part of the obama administration to determine the nature of the september 11 attack and those who planned it. secretary of state hillary rodham clinton says a posting on facebook isn't evidence of responsibility for the attack. hurricane sandy has killed at least two people as it turns toward the caribbean -- through the caribbean. a woman in haiti was swept away in the flood waters on wednesday. an elderly man was killed in jamaica when a huge boulder rolled on to his house. >> sandy has sustained winds at

80 miles per hour as it heads north. the storm will hit florida tomorrow with wind and rain but as bigad shaban tells us, it's expected to remain in the atlantic. >> reporter: sandy came crashing on to the shores of jamaica as a category 1 hurricane with 80 mile an hour winds. the storm threatened the island with flash floods and mud slides. police say an elderly man was killed after a boulder crushed his home. sandy took down trees and power lines and sent about 500 people fleeing to shelters. but some living in low-lying areas refused to evacuate for fear their homes would be burglarized. [indiscernible] trying to convince the people to leave the streets to come to this shelter. >> reporter: in haiti, one woman was killed after a swollen river swept her away. as the storm moves towards the u.s., it's expected to take one of two tracks. the first has sandy swirling off the east coast posing no

days ago. slipped another 25 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq was off by 8. s&p 500 was off by 4. the federal reserve says its help is still needed to increase growth and lower unemployment. the fed took no new action following its two-day meeting yesterday. policymakers are saying they still need time to see whether the bond buying program they put in place in september will actually help the economy. microsoft releasing its latest version of the windows operating system today. windows 8 is designed to make computers work more like tablets. best buy is hoping to capitalize on the new operating system offering computers with windows and staff to explain the new operating system. expect to pay more if you're flying for the thanksgiving holiday. according to travel website travelocity, the average domestic round trip is 9% more this year than last year. it's going to cost you about $386 on average. experts say waiting till the

things are topsy-turvy in the atmosphere. when we get hurricanes in october is not usual but for them to come up the east coast and not out to sea is unusual. we want to start with sandy which became a major hurricane. winds last night at 115 miles an hour. tony in the eastern atlantic, we're not going to worry about tony. never really were going to worry about tony. sandy over cuba last night. it's about to emerge back on the north coast of cuba shortly. you can see it is just maybe lost a tiny bit but still a very well defined storm with the eye right on the coast headed toward the central and northern bahamas as we go through the day on thursday. latest advisory winds 105. down just a tad. winds 105 gusting to 130 miles an hour. pressure down to 960 millibars. this thing exploded yesterday from a tropical storm yesterday morning to even a cat 3 at one point last night. we were looking at a category 2

storm this afternoon going through the central bahamas. a little jog to the northwest and back to the northeast. here we are by saturday morning. the questions come after that the official track for the hurricane center parallels the coast here as it heads east of us as a strong nontropical storm, still with winds at 70 miles an hour. we're talking tuesday morning. monday night, tuesday morning at 2:00 a.m. this is the official forecast. i want to show you the model forecasting on this. while it's pretty much in consensus here over the short term, watch what happens as we get beyond into monday and tuesday. some models go this way. did you see that? there are a couple of models -- three models now wanting to bring it towards the west. one of them toward the delmarva. this would be devastating should this occur. this is why we are concerned where sandy's future track may go. there could be a lot of damage on the coast. even cold enough believe it or not could have snow in the

great. no problems into the northeast corridor. all the potomac and anacostia river crossings are incident free. now a live look at the bay bridge coming all the way to the beltway. looking great this morning. i'll be back with more traffic coming up at 4:55. back to you. in health news this morning, researchers discover another potential use for one of the world's oldest and cheapest medications. a new study in the "new england journal of medicine" finds that aspirin is showing promise in helping to treat colon cancer. in fact five years after being diagnosed, 97% of patients who used aspirin were still alive compared to 37% of those not taking the drugs. some advanced cancer patients are optimistic about their chance for long-term survival. a new study also in the "new england journal of medicine" found 69% of patients with advanced lung and 81% of those with advanced colon cancer did not understand that chemotherapy was not likely to cure their disease. researchers say the

misunderstanding can pose obstacles to end of life planning. older women who use hormone therapy can reduce their risk of developing alzheimer's later on. researchers studied 1700 women who were 65 and older for more than a decade. those who used hormones within five years of menopause had a 30% lower risk of developing alzheimer's. more research is needed before any new recommendations come out before hormone use that are made for older women. government health experts are earning all pregnant women to get a whooping cough vaccination. the purpose is to protect newborns who are too young to get the vaccine. 16 people in the u.s. have died from whooping cough just this year. a new study of recently revised vitamin d guidelines found millions of americans may no longer need to take the supplements. >> the changes might be confusing for patients who previously were required to take extra vitamin d. >> reporter: doctors put 63- year-old alegra on vitamin d

supplements after blood tests showed low levels. but now a new study shows she does not need to take it anymore. >> deficiency of vitamin d is not as prevalent as we thought prior to the study which is good news. >> reporter: researchers at loyola university say under recent recommendations from the institute of medicine, nearly 80 million americans would no longer need additional vitamin d. the 2010 guidelines said people get enough vitamin d if their blood levels are at or above 20nanograms per million liter. older guidelines indicated above 30 were necessary. but some doctor groups don't agree with the new guidelines and are still describing doses of vitamin d under the old guidelines. vitamin d is critical for healthy bones but too much can damage the kidneys and heart. dr. albert levy says a balanced diet and a little sun can help maintain vitamin d levels.

>> sun will activate the vitamin d. 20 minutes of sun exposure three times a week. >> reporter: alegra is listening to her doctor and stop taking the supment but will let him know if she starts to feel different without it. >> patients should talk to their doctor if they're feeling fatigued or tired because that may be a sign of low levels. a warning before you raid the candy bowl this halloween. i was planning on that. eating too much black licorice could come with some unwanted side effects. the fda is warning it contains a sweetener called -- let me pronounce this -- just look it up on the back. it could cause a drop in potassium levels. when that happens people experience blood pressure problems. things get back to normal when people stop eating foods with this sweetener in it. time for the question of the morning. 20% of men say they do this whenever they have a bad day.
